Social distancing is keeping us from many of the formal events with which we would ordinarily mark the milestones of our lives. Fort Lee’s Army Community Service wants the community to know that although we’re unable to gather together for the 10th annual Survivor Outreach Service Butterfly Release, this does not mean that the sacrifice of fallen service members has been forgotten. In fact, we encourage you to participate in our special Virtual Butterfly Release and a Walking Memorial Tribute, May 21 - 26. The Virtual Butterfly Release and Walking Memorial Tribute gives all of us the opportunity to honor those who fell during service to their country while showing support of the families who’ve lost a loved one.
Virtual Butterfly Release
How to participate:
Download and print any (or all) of the attached Butterfly Release Certificates.
Color them as you wish, fill in the name of the fallen service member you wish to honor. (You can also write in “all our fallen heroes” or “those who sacrificed for our freedom,” if you so choose.)
Post your Butterfly Release Certificate(s) in your front window May 21 - 26 for all to see.
We want to see your butterflies too!
Share your tribute to your hero (or all the heroes) by taking a photo of your Butterfly Release Certificates and post them on the Fort Lee ACS Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) Facebook Event Page - Virtual Butterfly Release & Walking Memorial Tribute (include the hashtags #fortleesos, #fortleeacs, #fortleefmwr) - and then get out and take a walk to see who else in your community is “releasing” butterflies.
Walking Memorial Tribute
While checking out those beautiful butterfly window memorials, set aside a little extra time to participate in the Walking Memorial Tribute. Survivor Outreach Services is dedicating this special tribute to our fallen service members and their families.
The walk features large photo memorials of our fallen service members placed throughout the Fort Lee community. We encourage those in the community to support our fallen service members and their loved ones by posting pictures on social media (yours and ours) while you walk the memorial route. Include the hashtags #fortleesos, #fortleeacs, #fortleefmwr and tell us if you are walking in support of a loved one and/or what the Walking Memorial Tribute means to you.
